Not the part where you sit across from a finance manager who speaks a language designed to confuse you. Not the part where you have to know the difference between a secured loan and a personal loan, between joint accounts and individual credit, between the rate you’re offered and the rate you actually deserve. Nobody teaches you how to read the fine print on a lease, how to negotiate a payoff, how to protect your credit score when your life is changing faster than your bank account can keep up.We graduate millions of young adults every year who can analyze literature and solve for x, and have no idea how to do any of this.And then life hands them the bill.&nbsp; I watched it happen recently. A young man, early twenties, newly married, navigating the first real tangle of shared finances, suddenly underwater in decisions he had no framework for. Good kid. Responsible, one. Had a credit card he’d never missed a payment on. A car loan he was managing. Student loans under control. He was doing everything right.And then adult life arrived in full force: a spouse with her own financial history, joint accounts that needed opening, debt that needed restructuring, a car that needed replacing. All at once. All without a map.It happens to all of them. It happened to most of us.The difference is we forget we didn’t know either. We forget the specific vertigo of being twenty-two and realizing the world expects you to already understand things no one ever explained.&nbsp; Here’s what I’ve learned about advice and I’ve learned it the hard way, more than once.The quality of the information doesn’t matter if the receiver can’t own it.You can hand someone a perfect plan. The right steps, in the right order, with the math checked twice. And if they receive it as someone else’s answer, it will not hold. Not because they’re ungrateful. Not because they’re stubborn. Because human beings do not build confidence on borrowed conclusions.They build it on their own discoveries.This is not a new insight. Every good leader knows it. The ones who build strong teams aren’t the ones who give the best answers. They’re the ones who ask the right questions and then get out of the way. They create the conditions for someone else to arrive at clarity. That’s not a soft skill. That’s the whole job.Parenting a young adult is the same work. Harder, because the stakes feel personal in a way no professional relationship ever does. But the same work.&nbsp; The instinct, when you love someone, is to protect them from the pain you already know. You’ve made the mistakes. You’ve paid the interest, the penalties, the tuition that doesn’t come with a diploma. Of course you want to hand them the shortcut.But here’s what the shortcut actually costs them: the moment of figuring it out.That moment, the one where they research something on their own, sit with the options, feel the weight of the decision, and choose, is the moment they become someone who knows how to do that. Not just someone who did it once because they were told to. Someone who can do it again, in a new situation, without needing to call anyone.That moment cannot be given. It can only be made possible.The most powerful thing you can offer a young adult is not the answer. It is the question that sends them looking. Have you looked into the difference between these two types of loans? There might be something worth understanding there. And then, and this is the hard part, you stop talking.&nbsp; There is a particular grief in this that doesn’t get named enough.It is lovely to be needed. There is something real and warm in the phone call where someone you love is asking for your help and you have it to give. That feeling is not nothing. It is connection. It is proof that what you’ve been through has value, that your mistakes made you useful to someone.And at some point, you have to let go of that too.Because the young person building their life, building their marriage, their household, their confidence, needs to feel the ground under their own feet. Your presence in their decisions, even when it’s helpful, can quietly become the thing that makes the ground feel less solid. Not because of anything you did wrong. Because of the way love and authority tangle together when we aren’t careful.At some point you have to say: I’m here. I have everything I know. And none of it is worth anything if it becomes a wall between you and the people you’re building your life with.The young man figured it out.He took the information, all of it, and did his own research. He asked his own questions. He came to his own conclusions. And when he sat down with his wife and laid out a plan, it landed differently. Not because the plan was different. Because he was different in how he offered it.He offered it with the confidence of someone who understood it. Not someone who was repeating what he’d been told.She trusted it. They moved forward.That is what we’re actually trying to build when we raise children. Not people who have our answers, but people who know how to find their own. People who can lead the people they love with steadiness and clarity, not because someone is whispering in their ear, but because they’ve done the work themselves.&nbsp; The school system will not fix this. It is not designed to. Financial literacy, conflict navigation, the emotional mechanics of shared life. These are not testable in the ways that matter to institutions. They are learned in the living.Which means the real curriculum is still ours to offer. Parents, mentors, the people who survived the mistakes and came out with something worth passing on.We just have to learn how to teach without taking over the classroom.Ask the question. Point toward the door. I stand at the edge and watch first.I read who’s performing and who’s actually present. What’s safe and what isn’t. What’s worth the cost of entry. I’ve done it so long it feels like personality but it isn’t. It’s what happens when you grow up in a house where being too loud, too happy, too much, draws the wrong kind of attention. You learn to make yourself smaller. You learn to scan before you step. You carry that long after you’ve left the house that taught it to you.I know now that smallness was never mine to keep. But the body is slower than the mind, and some things take longer to “unknow” than to learn.Which is why, on that Saturday, I watched the Zumba class through the window and kept walking.A room full of women jumping around, screaming, dancing to music that had no interest in being subtle. I told myself it was practical. One class, once a week. I didn’t say out loud what I was actually walking toward.The moment the music started something came loose in my body that I wasn’t prepared for.I got emotional. The kind that moves up from below your ribs and sits in your throat. I was on my own island, half a beat behind, copying moves wrong, clearly lost and I was unlocking. I’ve done enough internal work to know what I was feeling. An inner child waking up. One who had learned, early, that her joy was inconvenient. One who had been kept very, very quiet.I cried through first few minutes of that class. Then I let the joy and silliness overtake me and danced.The second week I went back.There’s a moment in Zumba where the whole room erupts together. A collective WHOA at the same beat of the song. I had been watching it happen around me without joining. Observing from inside my own body the way I always do.Until I didn’t.I opened my mouth and let the sound out and something enormous shifted. Absurd. Joyful. Forbidden. That word is the one I keep coming back to. It felt forbidden in a way I couldn’t immediately name, which told me everything about how long I had been holding it and whose voice had put it there.I was missing steps. I looked like a fool. I kept going.I leave every class exhausted and wrung out and completely certain I’m going back. Because this stopped being about cardio after the first five minutes. Whatever is being unlocked in there is happening in installments. Each class peels something loose, each whoa makes more room. The liberation feels almost forbidden, which at this point in my life I’ve learned to treat as a signal.Here’s what I think about when I work with leaders navigating unfamiliar terrain: the instinct to observe until conditions are perfect is understandable. Intelligent, even up to a point. But growth doesn’t live in the doorway. The transformation is always on the other side of the threshold you keep almost crossing. You don’t get there by waiting until you know all the steps. You get there by starting to move.At Anthilles, this is the work. Mahjong had become a thing, suddenly, everywhere, and I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. My next-door neighbor invited me to join her group. Her and her mother, who is in her eighties, and has been playing for over forty years.I said yes.The rules, it turns out, are not that complicated. You learn the tiles. You learn how to build the wall, distribute, collect. You learn the rhythm of drawing and discarding and what the etiquette is around it. A few sessions and that part clicked.What doesn’t click as fast is the strategy.Every year, the American Mahjong Association issues new cards. Each card is a set of hands, specific tile combinations you’re trying to collect. The whole game is essentially this: figure out which hand to play, and make that decision fast. You start with a loose set of tiles, pass some around during the Charleston, and end up with thirteen. From those thirteen, you decide where you’re going. Then you draw and discard your way there. Or you don’t.I started learning at the end of the 2025 Mahjong year, which meant I had about two months with that card. Two months of studying hands, practicing on Mahjong 4 Friends app, learning how to read the board and adjust when the tiles weren’t coming. I was hooked almost immediately.Then April arrived and new cards. I hadn’t studied them yet. Mahjong just gave them a new place to play.But here’s what I didn’t fully appreciate until I was sitting at that table.Of course I knew she was better. Forty years of playing versus two months! That math is obvious. What I wasn’t prepared for was the quality of it. My neighbor’s mother, eighty-five years old, is better in every way that matters. She decides faster. Pivots more cleanly. Reads the table with a quiet precision that looks effortless, which means it’s anything but. She gets to Mahjong more often. And she does all of it without any visible strain, carrying on a conversation, completely unbothered. No hesitation. No visible effort.And she has friends like her. Women who play at a level so far beyond the rest of us that they won’t sit at our table. Not out of unkindness. We’re just too slow. They would be waiting on us all afternoon.When the session ends, I go home and sleep for an hour. My brain is cooked. She moves on to the next thing, knitting, errands, reading, whatever the afternoon holds, like we just had coffee.That gap is not about experience, though experience is part of it. It’s about what decades of this kind of thinking does to a mind. The strategic muscles aren’t just strong, they’re efficient. They’ve stopped burning extra energy on what’s already second nature.I watched her and thought: this is what I want.Not just to be good at Mahjong. But to still be playing at her level, sharp, present, delighted by the puzzle, forty years from now. The brain she’s maintained is not an accident. It’s a choice, made repeatedly, over a long time.There’s a version of leadership that works the same way. The post moved. Comments, conversations, momentum. The kind of day that reminds you why you’re doing this.Then the week did what weeks do.A colleague, also building something of her own, sat me down and pushed on my message. Not unkindly. She’s trying to help. But when someone asks you to dig deeper into what you’re selling, you find out quickly how much digging is left. Doubt crept in. Then resentment, which I’ve learned to take seriously, resentment usually means something real got touched. The flat days followed. Wednesday. Thursday. The kind of days where you don’t post, don’t reach out, don’t have the words.I am standing at a threshold. Something is either arriving or I’m about to decide what I’m walking toward. Both feel true at the same time. And yet there he was, still and unhurried, not looking at me exactly, not looking away, just present in the way that small creatures sometimes are when they have decided, for reasons of their own, that this is where they will be for a while.Neither dog moved. Neither dog made a sound.I just watched him.Something about the bunny reached into childhood. A soft, half-formed thing, my grandfather, bunnies in cages, the feeling of small warm weight in my hands. I have very few memories from those early years. Since the sabbatical they’ve been returning slowly, on their own schedule, only when I’m open like this. I don’t fully know why it was him I felt in that moment. I just know I did. I started tearing up before I even understood why.He just sat there. Then he hopped, unhurried, a little further down the path. Stayed there another five minutes. Not going anywhere.Then the bunny went up the hill, one flash, and gone.And the moment he disappeared, my other dog appeared. As if on cue. She came to me, touched my hand, looked into my eyes, checked my energy the way dogs do when they already know. She didn’t chase what had just left. She just turned toward me. You still here? Good.She was part of it. I’m sure of that. The whole thing was one piece. The stillness, the bunny, and then her, walking me gently back into the room.A year ago I wouldn’t have given another thought. Georgia has bunnies. It wandered in, it left.But the sabbatical did something I didn’t entirely plan for. It made me permeable. I move slower now. I receive things; signs, stillness, the particular quality of a morning when nothing is scheduled and something small sits outside your window and doesn’t ask anything of you.Birds are messages now. The slow morning is a message. The bunny was a message.I don’t know exactly what it said. Maybe it didn’t need to say anything specific. You can’t script it, you can’t prompt it. It just lands, usually when you weren’t looking for it.The invitation arrived out of nowhere. My former company’s annual outing (a Braves game) and I was on the list as a plus-one. And some of those people, my former direct reports, my colleagues, had become something closer to real friendships over time. Several of them had since been promoted or moved into broader roles. I was genuinely proud of them. I said yes.The timing was interesting. That Tuesday at the game, the following day I had a meeting that could shift the direction of my next chapter. I didn’t know yet how it would go. But Tuesday wasn’t the day to think about that.My friend met me at the entrance to the private section. And before I even made it ten steps inside, it started. Saying hello to the VP team, catching up with people I’d worked closely with, connecting with others I knew less well but had always liked. Everywhere I went, there was warmth. More than I expected, if I’m honest with myself.And then something surprised me.I was being introduced to a newer employees, people who joined after I left, who had never once worked with me. And the response when they heard my name: Oh my god, I’ve heard so much about you. I saw your photo in the directory.I didn’t know what to do with that. I stood there for a second, genuinely surprised.A few weeks earlier, I had written a piece about leading without authority, about how the real measure of leadership isn’t the title, it’s the trace you leave behind. Whether people move differently because of how you showed up. Whether the culture carries something of you in it, even after you’re gone.I always struggled to say that out loud about myself. It felt presumptuous. Like claiming something I hadn’t fully earned the right to claim.But that afternoon at the ballpark, I didn’t have to say it. It was just there. In the hugs, in the introductions, in the face of someone who knew my name before we’d ever met.The next day, in that important meeting, the question came up. How do you lead people? What does that look like for you?I didn’t reach for frameworks. I didn’t explain my philosophy or list my methods. I told the story of walking into that room.Because sometimes the proof arrives right when you need it. Quiet, unhurried, wearing baseball caps and holding beers.
